100 km del Sahara ULTRAMARATHON
A proposal aimed at running groups, Nordic walking and walking groups in general, multi-sports, teams or simply groups of people interested: we are available for ad hoc presentations to be made at their locations. On the occasion, in addition to the presentation of the program of the 23rd edition of the 100 km of the Sahara ULTRAMARATHON with video and photo support, direct contact and acquaintance between organizers and participants will be possible, doubts can be clarified and information on technical materials, general advice and preparation will be provided.

An ultra-marathon for strong atlletes looking for a demanding but not impossible challenge, thanks to a constant full assistance: dedicated medical service, race assistance service with quads and 4×4 vehicles, multiple waterpoints and a base camp at 60th kilometer.
The Eastern Grand Erg is the scenery, with its pistes and its dunes, with the finish line in front of Tembaine mountain, by a permanent tented camp. A high quality facility with tents provided with showers and toilets, bed, sheets and blankets.

DESERT CAMPSITE
1 Nights in the deserto in a permanent tented camp with:
• 3/4 beds tents, with beds and mattresses. Available single and double tent accommodations (with supplement).
• Lunch at camp cared by the local organization and supervised by Zitoway italian chef.
• Showers inside the tents.
- Infirmary tent.
- Tent Office and Race Direction.
• Recharge point for GPS, cell phones and devices.

The entire course is served withmedical and technical assistance of the organization
In case of need 4x4 vehicles can pick up and transport participants to the camp.

The 100km del Sahara ULTRAMARATHON is part of Zitoway Sport & Adventure races in desert environment, together with 100km of Namib Desert.
After-race accommodation in a hi-quality permanent tented camp , in a desert area close to Tembaine mountain, iconic spot in Tunisian Sahara, surrounded by big sand dunes in the heart of the desert.
The camp offers 2, 3 or 4 beds tents provided with beds and mattresses, in-tent showers and toilets, restaurant and bar tent, in a unique location, nestled among big dunes. This will be the race’s headquarter. The race will start from Douz oasis, the finish line directly at the camp.
The final lunch during the prizes ceremony will mix local and italian cuisine, with the supervision of our italian chef . Medical services will always be provided by Italian medical specialists. Medical services will always be provided by Italian medical specialists.

FAQ and Suggestions
- What documents I need ?
No visa is needed to enter Tunisia, only a passport valid for at least six months. - Do I need vaccinations ?
No vaccination is required. - Sharpness
Timing must be strictly respected: the organization won’t be responsible for mishappening due to personal disrespect of timing. During bus transfers, there will be no roll-calls or verification of those present at the time of departure, and each person will be personally liable for any absences not attributable to the organization. - What is the currency in Tunisia, do I need some money in the race?
The currency in Tunisia is the Dinar. 1 Euro = about 3 Dinars but you don’t need money in the race. They can be used to shop before or after the race. - Is the SIM card (for the mobile phone) OK?
The European SIM is fine even if the rates are not convenient. For little money you can buy a local SIM.
- How is the flight schedule?
Flights leave from Milan and Rome with destination Tunis. Transfers to hotels are by bus: from Tunis to El Jem and from El Jem to Douz. Roundtrip transfer Douz-Hammamet and to airport by bus. - How are the transfers ?
Transfers will be by comfort bus. Transfers times will be approximately 2,30 hours from Tunis to El Jem and 4 hours from El Jem to Douz. Transfer back from Douz to Hammamet will last about 6/7 ore, including stops.

How is the accommodation?
In Hammamet 4* hotel half board. In Douz 3*/4* Hotel 3*/4 * full board. The program includes 4 nights in hotel during transfers and 1 night at tented camp.
- How does the overnight stay in a tent take place?
Camp overnights is in 3 or 4 beds with mattresses, sheets and blankets. Available also double or single tents. Camp management, inlcuding catering, is taken care by the local organization with italian food added and our italian chef supervision .
What languages are spoken during the event ?
For the Zitoway Sport & Adventure staff, the basic language is Italian, but several members speak English, Spanish and French fluently. Among the participants, given the presence of so many foreign runners, the language used is often English. The briefing is in Italian and English. - Is there internet connection at camp ? In the desert signal is lacking or very weak, with little or no possibility to connect to the web.
- Can I make telephone calls from the camp ?
There is no connection at the camp. Bying a tunisian SIM is possible to call at a reasonable price, but obviously only in covered areas. - Which plug (adapter) do I need to charge the devices in the Campsites?
European plugs; (Italian 3-pole) power strips connected with generator are supplied. - How will my baggage be handled ?
Luggage will travel in tow of the 4×4 cars and will be retrieved upon arrival at the camp. - What food is offered at the camp?
Food is prepared by local staff , with the supervision of Zitoway’s italian chef and the preparation of italian meals. - I have dietary requirements what can I do?
Communicate this in advance to Born2Run agency who will inform Zitoway Sport & Adventure staff. - How are the showers? Is there hot water at camp ?
Showers are provided with hot water. - Are there toilets at camp ?
The camp is provided with toilets and hot showers - What will I need at camp (tracksuit, towel, shampoo, etc.) ?
It is recommended to bring a tracksuit and comfortable clothing for after the run, heavy sweatshirt or fleece jacket for the night and wind shell, warm hat, personal hygiene items.A pair of shoes/resting sandals.
Earplugs. - Can I dispose of my garbage at camp ?
Yes, there are waste collection bins. - What water is provided at camp ?
Drinking water is provided in sealed 1,5 liters bottles.
- What’s the climate like?
The climate is normally desertic, hot and dry. Conditions, though, can slightly change from year to year. - How are the temperatures?
Temperatures during October are quite warm (around 30°) especially in the late morning hours. At night temperatures are lower without ever being cold with about 15-18°C. - Are there animals in the Sahara?
It is possible to see dromedaries and maybe some goats. Then there are foxes, gazelles and scorpions but they are all very difficult to see.
- How is the terrain?
The race course is characterized by the characteristic surfaces of desert territories: sand dunes, hard and compact tracks with crossings of sand tongues.
- What is the mandatory equipment ? Mandatory equipment: at least 1 liter of water in the reservoir or bottles, mineral salts, survival blanket, whistle. Warmly reccomended: hat, sunglasses, biker goggles, high-protection sunscreen, energy bars and Compeed plasters.
Mandatory a flashing red light to hang on the backpack during the night hours and a headlamp, considering that at 19 is dark. Only a small backpack with clothes. change and personal stuff will be delivered to the Base Camp at 60th km.
- How is the track marked?
Arrows, high visibility webbing and flags, flags/poles with reflectors for night stages. - Where do I put the waste along the way?
Zitoway Sport & Adventure is very keen to respect the natural environments where all its competitions take place and therefore it is totally forbidden, according to the regulation signed by all the participants, to throw waste along the way. The waste must be kept with you, in your backpack or pouch up to the refreshment points or the camp where you can find the bags for differentiated waste that the organization takes care of throwing in the appropriate containers. - What is served in the refreshment points ?

Zitoway Sport & Adventure does not provide GPS track. No need of orienteering during the race: the entire course is marked and patrolled by our 4×4 vehicles.
It can be useful for personal data recording or pacing purposes. - Does the cell phone pick up along the way?
Singnal coverage is almost absent; some rare areas get signal, but it’s mostly impossible to connect. - Do I need a medical certificate to take part in the race ?
Yes, a medical certificate with cardiac stress test, released by a doctor is MANDATORY. - Should I take out personal insurance?
Integrating the basic insurance provided is recommended. - Is there any Zitoway Staff along the route?
Of course, the peculiarity of Zitoway Sport & Adventure as an organization is precisely that of giving the opportunity to enjoy a desert race in total safety and for this reason that the route is patrolled by different vehicles, 4x4s, quads, including that of the medical service. , all means that follow the race from start to finish. - Can I use headphones and listen to music during the 100km of the Sahara?

- NIight Stage
The stage is 13 km. It is mandatory to start with a race backpack and have a front light of adequate power, as well as a rear red flashing light to be activated at the start. Track signs will be made of reflective material that shines only when illuminated. The start will be in pairs spaced 30 seconds apart, in reverse order of ranking; walkers will also be in pairs and will start for their 6.5-kilometer leg after the runners. All this will allow the group to be much more compact coming in for showers and subsequent dinner at the restaurant.
- What are the best shoes for running on the sand?
The ground is variated. We recommend fairly structured trail running shoes. Shoes bigger at least one number more than usual, since feet tent to swell due to heat. Shoes must be tested before the race. - What socks ?
Socks with separate toes can prevent blisters - Do you need gaiters?
They are recommended to avoid, in the stages of sand, that it enters the shoes and they are also used for the other stages to avoid the entry of small stones – but it is a personal decision since using the gaiters increases the heat inside the shoes so you have to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages. - How do I dress for the race ?
In the morning can be pretty fresh, given the early start.t sunrise temperature grows pretty fast so light dressing with shorts and t-shirt is fine, being aware of possible sun burns ! A technical T-shirt is better than a tank top. Very important is to use a high protection sunscreen, expecially for those with fair complexion. A hat with veil is warmly reccomended. - Are walking poles useful ?
They can be useful, but there aren’t steep climbs. - Is anti-chafing cream useful?
Anti-chafing cream can help, but with the wind it could become annoying.

The organization’s medical staff will be composed of Italian doctors. - How Do I Prevent Blisters?
Blisters happen due to three main conditions: hot + humidity + rubbing. If we avoid one of these three factors, we can reduce the chance of blistering.
- Medical Service
For the heat – Proper socks and ventilated shoes are warmly reccomended as well as a size slightly bigger than the one is usually wore.
For humidity – Socks change or drying powder.
For Rubbing – Appropriate socks, split-toed ones work very well. NOK cream (being aware that with a sandstorm can become a problem). Compeed-type patches can be helpful.
- What can I put in an emergency kit suitable for the areas?
A wide-range antibiothic, an anti-dhiarroic, lactic enzymes: at camp hygienic conditions are usually monitored, but the long trip and the different climate conditions can sometimes cause some gastro-intestinal conditions. An antipyretic (Tachipirina), a painkiller (Brufen, Oki or similar).
A small kit for blisters with disinfectant, bandage and plasters and maybe a small syringe.
A tape and some second skin (compeed).
A h24 medical assistance is anyway guarantee for the entire event. - I wear contact lenses, are there any contraindications?
Sand can cause discomfort to contact lens wearers. Glasses or frequent change of lenses is reccomended
